Environmental Education Centre for Adelaide Zoo
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Zoos South Australia

Retrofit of old ape house for human use as educational facility with recycled/plantation timbers, recycled materials, feature walls of strawbale, an extensive (first in SA) and intensive green roof with camping area (for overnight educational ‘Zoo Snoozes’) and the first installed green wall in SA.

The underlying approach to the design is based on the idea that all of the ecologically responsible aspects of the building are 'made visible' and that as part of its role as an environmental education centre, connections are readily made between the building, its place, and its functions.
